internSHARE has 10,000 members!

michael

Today we got our 10,000th sign up, including Facebook Connect users. Compared to sites like Facebook, this may seem like a small number, but compared to many other internship reviews sites this number is huge. In recent weeks we’ve seen a lot of people sign up and login to read and write reviews. Tell your friends and help take internSHARE to the next level.logo

Coop Rankings is now a part of internSHARE

michael

cooprankings logoWe are excited to announce that Coop Rankings (formerly http://www.cooprankings.com) is now part of internSHARE. Coop Rankings was a very popular website started at the University of Waterloo. They had great success, bringing in thousands of users and thousands of reviews to their site. internSHARE’s great interface and recent popularity combined with Coop Rankings established success is a winning combination.

We are even more excited to bring Kevin and Tommy from Coop Rankings to the internSHARE team, so now you have six great minds trying to come up with ways to help you find the right internship or co-op placement.

Enjoy! And if you have any comments or technical troubles since the merge, let us know!

Thanks,
Michael

Layout Changes

michael

We’ve changed the layout a tiny bit.  The menu has become more streamlined and the login and sign up pages have now become fancy dialogs like you find at many modern websites today.   We stay on top of the latest trends and techniques and we want to give you the best that’s out there.

Most importantly, we’ve spent a lot of time improving performance.  We know there’s still more work to be done but we’ve drastically improved loading times, especially on Internet Explorer.  internSHARE runs fastest in Google Chrome.

Anyways, these changes are part of greater changes coming in the next few weeks, keep your eyes open and get excited, it’s going to be amazing!

Announcing the (FREE) Job Board!

michael

We’ve had enough interest in job postings that we’re officially launching our new job board. We spent many hours creating and testing the board on top of our proprietary internSHARE framework and we hope you enjoy the result. We have a small number of jobs posted already and we hope that it will grow over time. Posting a job is FREE in there is no harm done, so if you’re an employer reading this, post an internship, summer job, co-op, new grad, or part time job!

New Rating System

michael

We just launched our new Rating System. It’s important to note right off the bat the reviews still use the same five point scale and rate the same six categories. The changes are in the way we determined the overall company ratings. We average all of the user ratings in each category to determine overall ratings and we used to display these numbers on a scale of 5 with 0.5 point intervals. The new system still averages all user ratings but will give ratings out of 100, which allows for better comparison between companies. The reason for changing is to make the site more useful and give you the best experience possible and we hope that’s what you find.

Here’s an example describing the benefit of the new system. Previously, Company A might have had an overall rating of 4.5 and Company B might have had an overall rating of 4.5. Because of our 0.5 interval scale, this means that each company’s exact rating could be between 4.26 and 4.75 but was rounded to 4.5. The new system will give more accurate ratings out of 100, so if Company A was really 4.26 and B was really 4.75, then the ratings will now appear as 85 and 95, a considerable difference!

Facebook Profiles

michael

As you may know, internSHARE is a Facebook Connect site, which means we can bring Facebook Application features directly to our site. One benefit of connecting your internSHARE and Facebook accounts (or logging in directly with your Facebook account) is that you will be able to see more information about reviewers who have also connected to Facebook. We recently launched internSHARE profiles so that members can find out a bit more about who wrote a review and now Facebook profile information will automatically supplement your internSHARE profile.

Try going to a company page like IBM or AMD and see what kinds of information you can see. You’ll notice that the information you see is limited by a reviewer’s Facebook Privacy settings and whether they wrote an anonymous review.

This might sound rather complicated but rest assured that you can only see information on internSHARE that you would be able to see on Facebook. Access to Facebook information is controlled by Facebook and nothing is stored on our servers, we simply bring together the information dynamically to give you a better experience.

User Profiles

michael

We added Mini-User Profiles to internSHARE. By enabling your profile, a small box with your Profile information will be visible beside your reviews. Anonymous reviews will only show your Program and Graduation Year. To activate your Profile, go to your Settings page and fill out as much information as you want, then click on the “Show” link.

By filling out your profile, you’re helping readers get a sense of your experience which can be used to put your reviews in context.

Send us any comments you have about the new Profile system.

Invite your Friends

michael

We’ve added an invite tool to the Share box on the left hand side of every page. You can invite friends from your email contact list or from almost any social network. Just enter your email address and password for a particular service and choose your friends from that service that you want to invite. We’ll send an email to each person you select and ask them to visit internSHARE. No login information is stored during this process, it’s simply used to extract your contact list. The contact list and login information are destroyed when you leave the page.
